Description:

The Idan Raichel Project is the brainchild of Israeli keyboardist, composer, producer, and arranger Idan Raichel, who invited over 70 different musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds to participate in the recordings. In particular, Raichel has long been fascinated by the music of Israel's growing population of Ethiopian Jews, and many songs feature members of Israel's Ethiopian community. The recordings also include Arab musicians, traditional Yemenite vocalists, a toaster and percussionist from Suriname and a South African singer, among others.

The Project released its first album in Israel in 2002 and quickly became one of the biggest success stories in the history of Israeli popular music. The haunting Ethiopian chorus of the first single, "Bo'ee" (Come With Me), sounded completely unlike anything most Israeli's had heard before. The groundswell of interest propelled the album to heights rarely seen in the local music scene and firmly established Idan Raichel as a new type of Israeli pop star. Now a musical icon in the Israeli community worldwide, The Idan Raichel Project has performed to sell-out crowds in prestigious venues in Paris, Brussels, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and beyond.

The international release of The Idan Raichel Project's recordings on the new record label Cumbancha promises to introduce a wide new audience to the electrifying work of this unique musical collective. The Project offers a new vision for how Israelis, their neighbors in this volatile region, and people all over the world, can cherish their individual cultural traditions, celebrate their differences and through respectful collaboration create new and inspiring expressions. "Our ability to live in peace with one other depends on our learning to appreciate and respect each other's differences," notes Idan. "The way forward is not by trying to change your neighbor, but by accepting him and recognizing that we are all looking for the same things in life: bread, water, spirit, respect and love."

Deluxe international version is enhanced with three music videos and other special features.

5I can't stop playing itMar 04, 2010
I was at the library looking at CDs to check out and the disc jacket photo intrigued me so I brought it home to have a listen. Oh My God! I ended up buying it because I had to own it myself since I couldn't stop playing it. The beauty and passion of the music was overwhelming, and I still keep listening to Mi'Ma'amakim (Out Of the Depths) over and over again. It starts out with an Ethiopian singing lyrics, then Idan singing the Hebrew, and they go back and forth until they're both singing together. It's just beautiful. Even though that song is over five minutes long I will listen to it three times in a row.

The English translation comes with the CD for most of the songs, and the lyrics are beautiful too. Treat yourself and buy this CD. The CD has 3 videos you can play on your computer and links, including Idan's touring dates. I was lucky enough to get a ticket for his concert in my area next week. I can't wait!

This CD is awesome. And there are also music videos on it for the songs. All in all, very cool.

4A stunning work of artApr 14, 2009
The other reviews basically say it all. Idan Raichel is a lot like Cheb i Sabbah (Shri Durga, La Kahena) in the way that he mixes ancient sounding music with subtle electronics and a modern sensibility. The main difference is that Idan Raichel also sings backing and leading vocals on some of the songs, and he cuts across cultures and styles in a bold way.

Songs on this album juxtapose Biblical poems and Hebrew pop with Ethiopian chant, Jewish prayers with reggae and Suriname creole vocals (on the powerful Be'Yom Shabbat), Arabic vocals with an Arabic orchestra riff (the multi-textured Azini), and a South African song with Jamaican toasting (Siyaishaya Ingoma). Quite a variety of styles!

The other main difference with Cheb i Sabbah is that this album often has a pop sensibility to its songs. This makes for very attractive melodies that stay with you, and make you want to hear them again and again, but on some of the songs it gets a bit too pop-ish. You get used to it after a while, and I've come to appreciate those songs as well, but I prefer the complex arrangements, especially Boee (Come To Me), which has Ethiopian chant, someone speaking Hebrew, someone singing without words, and finally the Hebrew singing - all haunting melodies. Despite the descriptions, the Idan Raichel project is not in the least bit New Age sounding, which I also appreciate. Idan Raichel is clearly a genious at arranging music, creating songs that truly connect to the heart.

This CD also has a very nice, artistic booklet with the lyrics to the songs, which include Hebrew, Amharic, Arabic, Zulu and Suriname creole (not always translated into English in the booklet!).

Also, if you have an enhanced version of this CD, by all means use the features. It includes three music videos, and also a VIP section on their website which allows you, if you have the enhanced CD, to download two complete free songs. So in a way, you get fourteen songs instead on just twelve, which is really cool.

This is a beautiful collection of songs, really relaxing and take you mind to a place of ease. Great mix of Jewish and Ethoipian music together, really this group knows how mucis should sound.
