Description:

The ink well is an essential tool in the tradition of oriental brush painting. The stone acts as both grinding surface for the solid ink stick and ink well for painting and writing. There is no culture in the world where putting brush to paper has a longer history than China, where paper was invented. Reorient's traditional ink well comes from Shanghai and is made today in much the same was as hundreds of years ago. The authentic cold stone is instrumental in the arts of both literature and watercolor brush painting throughout Asia. In the Zen discipline, brushwork is also used as an exercise in meditation. Our simple round and square ink stone is the perfect compliment to a Zen arts setting.

5Grind that stoneMay 12, 2007
By Tom Sez
This is a decent ink grinding stone for only seven dollars. It looks great, very zen-like and grinds the ink stick well. The color is charcoal and measures 3 by 3 inches with the inkwell portion one half inch thick. The lid is a great feature for keeping the ink from drying out if you have to leave off painting for a bit. I've been grinding ink on this stone quite a bit and the surface hasn't scratched or been grooved, which is more than I can say for a couple other stones I have used. I rated this product a 5 not because it is the best on the market, but because for the price it is quite a good machine carved stone.

4For the price, perfectDec 29, 2007

Although this inkwell is not finely finished enough to be called "beautiful," it's perfect for starting out, and you can't beat the price.

5Good qualityJul 28, 2010

This is a very nice grinding stone. It's elegantly simple and works as intended. It is the same size as an adult palm. A tip: make sure to always rinse after use, if you leave the ink on it will lose it's grinding abilities.

Well wrapped, fast shipment. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it a good, heavy piece.
