Each scroll is entirely hand painted by artists in China's southern provinces. The paintings use traditional brushes, rice papers, inks and water colors to create a work of vibrant color and stark detail. No two scrolls are identical as slight variations in style, brush work and surrounding elements make each panting one-of-a-kind. The tiger in Chinese folklore is among the most powerful images for warding off evil. Tiger paintings are used to protect palaces, tombs and common homes from bad energy and evil spirits. In ancient Chinese armies tigers were used to decorate weaponry and a tiger insignia designated high rank in the military of the Qing Dynasty. Paired with a dragon a tiger represents the Yin of the Toaist Yin and Yang. The stripes on a tiger's forehead are also thought to resemble the Chinese character for king, adding to the assumed power and auspicious nature of the tiger.
